AT&T’s website is not accepting iPhone orders in New York City, Westchester County and some New Jersey suburbs. When attempts are made to place an order for an iPhone with a two year contract, the following message is displayed: “Sorry this Package is not available in your area”.
According to the New York Times, Laura Northrup of the Consumerist was told during an online chat with an AT&T representative named Daphne that “the phone is not offered to you because New York is not ready for the iPhone. You don’t have enough towers to handle the phone”.
However, when contacted by the New York Times, the unavailability of the iPhone was attributed to fraudulent activity online. The Times reported that iPhones are available at the Apple Store on 5th Avenue.
This looks like yet another black eye for ATT, which has been criticized for providing insufficient capacity for the heavy data traffic from iPhone owners.
